Thank you SciReg. It was actually something that was quoted by Richard Dawkins at a meeting last night and I loved it!
Don't get me on the police...
BUT. A police force is only as good as its management, its training and its equipment. People expect it to be everything, but don't want to invest in it: particularly politicians.
Why? Because investing in long-term stuff like training, prevention, is not going to achieve visible, short term results. More votes come from 'we will cut budgets so you pay less taxes'.
But having said that, I am less than impressed with what I have seen of policing in the UK lately. Too many chiefs, not enough indians.
A good police force (and yes, there are some) *is* humble, I agree.
